"Application of Autonomous Remotely Operated, Vehicles for Detailed Exploration of Mineral Deposits" Marek Narewski, Lech A. Rowiński

Abstract
Various tools are needed for mineral deposits investigation. Different types of free fall, bounce and suspended grabbers are widely used nowadays. Autonomous ROV with ability of collecting nodule samples seems to be the best tool for detailed exploration of mineral site. Geologist will be able to get detailed information regarding sea bottom characteristics, nodule density and metal content in precisely located points. Consequently, decision making and risk analysis will be improved.

"Underwater Technology Developments in Ship Research Institute of Technical University of Gdansk"
Marek Narewski, Lech A. Rowiński

Abstract
During the last 20 years polish interest in underwater activity was limited to some selected areas, however some interesting achievements had been made. Manned submersibles like DELFIN and underwater habitats MEDUZA are the best known. Other projects which were completed in mid 70-ies include:
- towed, manned, wet submersible for underwater observation CZAPLA
- manned submersible LTS-7 GRZES for fishing gear observation
- decompression chambers for miliary and civil applications
- submarine rescue ships for Polish and other Navies
Decompression chambers were original polish design. Staff of the Ship Research Institute was engaged in design phase of those projects.[l] Four types of chambers were designed including foldable one, as well as one and two compartment chambers...

"JETTISON EMERGENCY CAPSULE" Lech A. Rowinski

Abstract
The jettison emergency capsule is a special device designed for rescuing life under the most difficult weather conditions. The use of slinging pyrotechnic agents makes the launching of the capsule extremely fast, also ensuring that it lands at a consi-derable distance from the object in danger. The designs brought into practical use enable the capsule to be ejected with 16 persons inside from a height of up to 30 m. The personnel inside' is protected from environmental conditions and such agents as fire and poisonous gases....

"A Measurement of 3-D Water Velocity Components During ROV Tether Simulations in a Test Tank Using Hydroacoustic Doppler Velocimeter"
Leszek Kwapisz, Marek Narewski, Lech A.Rowinski, Cezary Zrodowski

Abstract
A computer simulation of ROV tethers performance could be done more precisely if velocity field of water flowing around the tether cable is known. The paper describes operation and performance of the doppler acoustic velocimeter ADVlab. A brief outline of the procedures and related problems with determination of 3-D velocity components in the test tank is described.....

"Submersible propulsion and energy: FROM LTS-7 TO UKWIAŁ" Key words: motion, submersibles, propellers, sources of energy Lech A.Rowinski

Abstract:
There is nothing exceptional in underwater technology except for environment. But this single factor means very difference, that creates many problems to underwater system designers and operators. For many years Department of Underwater Technology has been involved in design and construction of various submersible crafts. They ranged from 35 kg diver towing vehicle to 1500 Mg manganese nodule mining vehicle. All the vehicles designed require a kind of propulsor and adequate source of energy. Different solutions were exploited for every considered application. In most cases several prototypes were built and modified before fully acceptable solution was found. Experience gained during 30 years of work with live systems gives the University substantial capabilities in new developments and education. Paper describes most significant vehicle designs and outlines principal problems encountered in the area of interest of this conference...

"New designs of underwater vehicles from Underwater Technology Department, Technical University of Gdansk" Leszek Matuszewski M.Sc.

Abstrakt
New designs have been recently added to wide range of submersibles developed at Underwater Technology Department. After completion of KORAL AT ROV, an autonomous vehicle prototype, for Baltic Sea environment monitoring, is being currently developed. Paper describes operational requirements for the craft and its principal components. Vehicle control by remote means is not discarded however. This technology has been adopted for a sea mine destruction system with disposable low cost vehicle used for mine identification and destruction. Other interesting development is the newest version of diver towing vehicle. The vehicle is constantly improved and modified to different requirements regarding range and special equipment. The latest design is shortly described...

"Submersible conceptual design using computer aids" Lech A. Rowinski

Abstract
Submersible design algorithm has been analysed in details. As result a program named DVCAD is proposed. It aids designer work in most creative phases of its work. While intended principally for submersibles, the approach can be adopted for work with other complex systems which can be described as well known in principles but of arrangement difficult to define. This would however require changes in expert procedures and component database. Paper describes principal problems which must be solved to balance requirements for high flexibility, easy to read graphical interface, real time operation and software as well as hardware limitations...

"Mine counter vehicles for Baltic navy" Key words: submersibles, remote control, mine neutralisation. Lech A. Rowinski, T. Kubaty

Abstract:
During two great wars of last century Baltic waters were mined extensively by all navies acting in the area. Some of the mines were never recovered. This can also happen in future. This is a reason for counter mine forces in Polish Navy. For some time new technologies are being introduced. Naval mine neutralisation technology is very cost sensitive. Two mine counter systems presented, were developed with this constraint in mind. While total operational costs depend strongly on mass and dimensions, remotely operated vehicles of the systems are comparatively small. Descriptions of the systems are followed by indication of important similarities that allow alternative use of the vehicles from platforms and consoles. Capability of joint operations is indicated and explained. Operators trainer that can be used to educate operators of both system is therefore a logic solution. This is based on computer simulation of images presented on console screens.

"A plastic craft for underwater observations" Key words: submersibles, composite. Lech A. Rowinski

Abstract:
Underwater Technology Dept. has developed an underwater vehicle for observation of fishing gear in operation, for the use of the Marine Fisheries Institute in Gdynia. The unit has the shape of a sphere its internal diameter being 1400 mm and external diameter - 1520 mm, made of polyester and glass composite. It can be immersed to a depth of more than 500 m.
